Hollyhock isn’t exactly seen as the hotspot of nightlife.

Hollyhock is a sleepy residential community with a quaint downtown district that could rival Honey Hollow in its cozy appeal. And it just so happens to be where Noah hails from. He grew up here with his brother Alex before his father decided to nuke the family. Suze ran away to Florida for a time, and Wiley took up with Everett’s mother Eliza before he took her for all he could. Thankfully, Noah and Alex came unscathed from the nightmare—same for Everett and his sister, Meghan.

Slightly Batty is located off the beaten path, past Main Street with all of its fall décor, and down a darkened windy road that leads to an old rustic-looking building with a sea of cars parked in rows just outside of it.

A giant purple neon bat spins atop the roof, and over the thick wooden door there’s a glowing picture of a quintessential vampire with his face pale as death, his eyes red as rubies, and his pointed canines resting over his lower lip with a trickle of blood to go along with it.

Noah, Everett, Carlotta, and I step into the establishment where it’s dark, holds the strong scent of burgers, something deep-fried, and the faint scent of hard liquor. Haunting rock music blares from up above, and there are so many people here it makes me wonder where they all came from. I’m pretty sure all of Hollyhock doesn’t have this many living souls in it. And oddly enough, each and every last soul in the place—dead or alive—is wearing a long, black velvet cape with red satin lining. It looks to have a hood attached as well, and it’s hauntingly beautiful.

It’s spacious inside. Heck, it’s roughly the size of a small city with concrete floors and ceilings that seem to stretch to the heavens. It’s rustic from what I can tell, but it’s dark. Dim would be too soft a word.

A bevy of purple and red lights shine down on the place as a green mist circulates around our ankles, giving it the exact eerie appeal I’m sure Sam and Luna are going for. Bats of every shape and size are included in the décor, and there’s a smattering of pumpkins and glowing jack-o’-lanterns out and about to remind you that it’s the spookiest time of the year.

The tables are set to the left, a dance floor to the right, and a bar runs along the back.

A blonde waitress comes up, looking like the exact coffin dweller she’s hoping to emulate, and Noah tells her we’re meeting Sam Thompson. The woman raises a brow and inspects us a moment before taking off to find her boss.

“See that, Lot?” Carlotta waddles my way, struggling to hold the tote bag in her arms, which is bloated like a beach ball. My guess is it’s loaded with more of her blood-red poison she’s looking to offload in an effort to turn a buck. In fact, I know it is because I can hear the jars clinking up against one another each time she shifts.
